HONG KONG OUTLAW SET TO SAVE LIVES IN MONGOLIA

Test for Life Mobile Clinic

After 18 months of hard work, the Rotary Club of Hong Kong, together with the Rotary Club of Admiralty and industry sponsors – Hong Kong Land Rover Club and British Motors, have completed the conversion of a 6x6 Land Rover pickup truck into a fully-fledged mobile clinic. The vehicle will be donated to the Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar Central at an official ceremony and Hong Kong Rotarians will drive it to Mongolia later this year.

While this impressive 6x6 car may be banned from being registered in Hong Kong, making it a true outlaw on the road here, it is a perfect choice for hosting a mobile clinic for rugged roads in less developed countries. High-performance mobile clinics allow doctors to treat patients who were out of reach because of the climate, geographical conditions, or insufficient infrastructure.

The clinic will provide screening and vaccination services against cervical cancer and is set to influence behavioral changes for an improved quality of life and better health in Mongolian women. According to WHO, cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women worldwide. Due to poor access to screening and treatment services, more than 90% of deaths occur in women living in low- and middle- income countries.

Until 2015, doctors recruited by Rotary in Mongolia within the “Test for Life” project tested over 30,000 women, saving close to 1,800 lives thanks to early cancer detection. The retrofitted clinic marks the completion of the latest stage of development of “Test for Life”, international initiative of Rotary. The value of the project exceeds HK$ 800,000, which covers the purchase of the vehicle, the costs of new cabin, mechanical parts, and interior fittings for clinic use.

In addition to the handover of the mobile clinic to the Mongolian Rotary representatives, there will be a briefing on the progress of the project. The vehicle will be exhibited for viewing at the venue. REGISTER now to see the Rotary Mobile Clinic before it drives off to Mongolia!
